Metrics and de-normalized ODS: On the metrics discussion, the general direction was to recommend looking at a de-normalization layer that would not move all the way to end-user metrics. Then allow calculations of final metrics to occur at the application layer. This would also reduce the complexity of queries to produce that de-normalization. This might also establish a smaller set of tables that could be used to help others understand the model.

Some members also reinforced the need to provide resources to teach business analysts how to use the model, and hoping that this work would serve that effort.

Other ideas:

  • Need for security, perhaps row level security
  • Real-time updates are often an expectation: when data changes in source systems, visualizations are expected to update promptly
  • Smaller districts don't have the skill level to use PowerBI tools
