Discussion Topics
Proposed Ed-Fi Composite APIs
One of the areas of discussion was around how to handle references to educational standards (like Common Core or other state standards), so that data could be shared between institutions and these references preserved. It was generally agreed that currently the practice would be for individual agencies to populate those themselves, which could result in problems. Academic Benchmarks and the Achievement Standards Network were listed as possible sources of standardized reference IDs.
On the proposed Ed-Fi Assessment API (composite) no concerns were raised as to the design. The general advice was that the current model of pushing out a domain aggregate that walked the hierarchy and packaged it together was a good starting point. In the discussion a few possible future directions were raised, notably
- Convenience APIs - simpler ways to access the info. The suggestion was that it is often best to "wait and see" and take feedback from implementers before creating more of these.
- Search by standard - it was noted that increasingly searches that include standards as parameters are the way that users and systems want to access assessment information
The possible use cases for the API were also discussed. These included not only transfer of assessment results to analytic / BI systems, but also the transfer of assessment results from states to LEA, including state tests
IMS Collaboration
The IMS collaboration was briefly touched on at the end of the meeting.
Actions
- Eric to follow up with Academic Benchmarks on what they publish for referencing standards.
- Eric to look into what happened with the Achievement Standards Network
