Meeting Notes
Update on Section 504
Model Updates:
The updated model is based on previous meetings and work done in specific regions.
It will be included in the 5.2 release.
Discussion Points:
There was a proposal to have a collection of dates and date types at the program level instead of specific dates.
This approach would help in tracking different events associated with dates.
The idea of expanding this to programs in general was supported.
There was a recommendation to consider duration and date type for better tracking.
The difference between begin and end dates versus duration was discussed, with a focus on limiting duration to date, hours, and minutes, and using a descriptor to define it.
The use of Section 504 for disability was clarified, with a descriptor having its own core value.
Shortened School Days Updates in the Model
Proposal:
Based on the last meeting, tracking shortened school days for IEP students was considered overkill.
The proposal included adding a StudentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation with a decimal to calculate the reduction for IEP students against the general student population.
This will be included in the DS 5.2 release.
Discussion Points:
The new property should be ShortenedSchoolDayIndicator.
There was a discussion on how this would interact with calendar information and whether it would cause disagreements on enrollment dates.
Feedback indicated that using the calendar is required as a solution, but it would be independent from calendar data in some regions and not used for attendance.
Adding Dual Credit and Post-Secondary Institution Tracking
Model Extensions:
Some states have extended the model to collect dual credit data.
The maximal solution was discussed, including dual credit on StudentSectionAssociation.
Discussion Points:
There were use cases where students receive dual credit from colleges.
The preference was not to require post-secondary institutions but to use a descriptor.
Issues were raised about where to tag dual credit and the introduction of a descriptor value.
The possibility of having an optional element for a unique identification number assigned to post-secondary institutions was discussed.
The terminology of "Dual Enrolled" versus "Dual Credit" was debated, with flexibility suggested to use either term.
The storage of dual credit outcomes in course transcripts was confirmed.
Different types of dual credits were identified, including students taking classes at colleges, AP classes, and concurrent enrollment.
Two Cases Relating to Student Behavior & Discipline
Case 1:
The issue of schools reporting separate incidents to have a single perpetrator in each was discussed.
There was a suggestion to move the weapon descriptor to the student attribute rather than the incident.
The model's support for including weapons in student behavior was debated.
The need for data collection for version 6.0 was highlighted.
Case 2:
The use case for many-to-many relationships in behavior and discipline was discussed.
Assigning severity order for behavior and discipline to align based on severity level was suggested.
The model's configurability to allow multiple offenses to one incident was confirmed.
The issue of multiple actions associated with one incident and the inability to connect actions to specific behaviors was raised.
The proposal to allow either multiple disciplines per incident or multiple behaviors per incident was discussed.
National School Lunch Program
Postponed: The discussion on the National School Lunch Program was postponed to December.
