#2 Deep Dive Discussion: Intersection and Use of Data Standards

A Practical Guide to Interoperability Use Cases (2018) is being updated after 4 years with focus on 10 use cases in a story format. The planned structure is to have use case with organization/agency/owner, followed by standards or COTS available to solve the problem. What are the use cases that certain standards bodies are able to/well positioned to solve? The approach will be to call out if more than one option and provide information so people can review and make decisions.

What else would be useful and are there other priorities? Is it helpful in your work in the community?

  1. Edit: needs updated branding
  2. Point of Clarification: does the API function without the ODS? Are storage and exchanged coupled? How to capture context with answer (agency or vendor; actual community deployment v. proof of concept and abilities)?
  3. Adjustment needed: LTI under-represented (rostering and learning results use cases)
  4. Use case to add: data dictionary; common (standard) language for data stored
  5. Can we add more specific call outs of SEA, LEA throughout
  6. Are there “ands” that don’t have an answer yet
  7. Edit: Academic benchmarks link
  8. Clarification: OpenSALT as a standard and as a tool
  9. Clarification on how deep we go into each product (EPP starter kit call out)
  10. Use case add: longitudinal or multi-year data store
  11. The transport, needs, and who’s looking at it are very different – user context
  12. Adding concept of personas + what questions are we trying to answer with the data
  13. Suggestions for future components from “chat”:
    1. Ed-Fi LDS API
    2. Ability to analyze by assessment items and student responses
    3. Recorded set of webinars and/or Ed-Fi Academy tracks

Comments and Next Steps:

  • Re-envision document for usability – personas, grain size++
  • How do we use this – simply reposting/wraparound blog series/conference sessions to dive into
  • Get to a better place and revisit how we can get input from other data standards group and do this well – not a competition
  • Roll out for community understanding and usability
    • Blogs, webinars, conference presentations with community members
  • Reorganize specification efforts around local operational data
    • TAG to review ways to do this
  • Will circle back to GAT before Q3 after editing and create plan going forward from input

#3 Community Highlight

Four Implementation Capability Frameworks (ICF) have been developed by the NewLeef Team – one each for LEAs, SEAs, Collaboratives and EPPs. These were based on multiple focus groups, interviews and reviews with Ed-Fi Community Members and the Alliance.

To successfully implement and make use of the Ed-Fi technology over time, education organizations need to have (or have access to) certain capabilities (i.e., skills, processes and tools). Before beginning (or extending) an Ed-Fi initiative, it is important to know where an implementing agency is related to the needed capabilities. ICF courses are being developed for the Ed-Fi Academy.

Additional information can be found at PPT.
