Analytics Engineering Fundamentals Pathway

DRAFT FOR DISCUSSION

A data environment that brings together disparate data from an education organization's edTech applications for the purpose of creating longitudinal datasets designed for use in analytics is our goal here. Democratizing data and making it accessible to all authorized users within the district can have far-reaching positive effects on student’s lives.

The Analytics Engineering Fundamentals Pathway is designed to lead a person through the implementation of an Ed-Fi Academy Reference Architecture. Our reference architectures lay out the data workflows required to organize data from many sources into well documented datasets ready for analytics. At the end of the pathway, the student will have a production-level data environment. This pathway ends with a capstone project where the student will build a data report/dashboard that can be put in the hands of their school leaders or educators.

By the end of this pathway, the student will be able to:

  • Navigate a terminal
  • Understand the differences between transactional systems and analytical systems
  • Deploy the Ed-Fi Technology Suite
  • Understand the Ed-Fi Data Standard and the benefits it provides
  • Be comfortable working with containerized applications
  • Configure source systems with Ed-Fi integrations to send data to an Ed-Fi API
  • Use a Jupyter Notebook to make API calls against an Ed-Fi API as a way of exploring what's in an ODS
  • Create ETL workflows that move data from an Ed-Fi API to a data lake, and materialize it in a cloud data warehouse as dimension and fact tables
  • Use git and version control in their workflow
  • Be comfortable using SQL to transform data
  • Understand dimensional modeling as a necessary design process for analytics
  • Validate that the data in their analytics environment is representative of what's in their source systems
  • Create a data report/dashboard with data that refreshes on an automated schedule
  • Be an active participant in the Ed-Fi Community
