Ed-Fi Standards and Ed-Fi Technology

This document is intended to clarify the typical processes that the Alliance takes in incorporating new standards artifacts into its technology offerings. Note that this document is non-normative - it is intended to explain typical processes, and is not a definition of those processes.

Figure 1: How Ed-Fi standards are incorporated into Ed-Fi technology.

The diagram should be mostly self-explanatory, but a few parts deserve attention.

  • RFCs may be incorporated into a data standard version (such versions are typically given an appended letter to signal the incorporation of RFC material, as in RFC 3.5a). However, the material may also be reflected in extension sets in the "ed-fi.org" or other organizational namespace (not shown in the picture).
  • The Ed-Fi ODS Platform does not necessarily produce a release for every data standard version, as that would be inefficient. Rather, releases are selected by the Alliance in consultation with the community on needs. Community members may of course elect to produce other releases locally as dictated by their needs.
