States define the data requirements based on their policy mandates and needs.   Vendors are required to contact their state representative to get the data requirements. In addition to the data specification document, states typically share information with their vendors about how support data submission certification processes. The state certification process ensures that each student information system can pass all required information via the State-Ed-Fi API. State Certification is conducted at the student information system vendor level for a specific version of that Vendor's SIS. This process often involves working through several 3-4 hour sessions testing the vendor system's ability to pull and push data via the API.
