RVWG Close out summary
As described in the current RVWG charter, the current phase goals are:
- Survey the community on how visualization solutions are pulling data out of the Ed-Fi ODS/API and document the strategies within Ed-Fi's Techdocs.
- Coalesce the "data out" strategies used in the community into a resource for new members
The results of the work groups surveys and demonstrations covered:
- Indiana INsite's approach for hitting multiple use cases with a custom dashboard based on Ed-Fi's original dashboard and leveraging options for district customization
- Education Analytics' development of Snowflake and Power BI to deliver analytics off a downstream data lake - later became rebranded as their Stadium product and Enable Data Union
- LEAD Public Schools' demo of an analytical platform with visualizations using the API and Google's BigQuery
- Ed-Fi starter kit demonstrations using base Ed-Fi collateral for specific use case focus
- An Ed-Fi exchange project to demonstrate a dashboard replacement using modern technologies
After the completion of surveys, we had a Tech Congress session on data analytics driven by Education Analytics and Instructure who proposed that the API was sufficient for all downstream use cases including analytics and dashboarding. That session was popularly attended and received good feedback.
Based on all the discussions, the "data out" strategies defined by Ed-Fi will coalesce on two main themes:
- Continue to support the ODS sourced data strategy for the foreseeable future as outlined in Limiting Impact on the Production ODS
- Promote and support an API sourced data strategy for analytics and reporting in the community. This strategy is well-represented in the vendor community.
Final Thoughts
To Members of the Reporting and Visualization Work Group:
A sincere Thank You to all RVWG members including chair Rosh Dhanawade. The sharing among participants on both phases of the RVWG was much appreciated across the Ed-Fi Community. Your discussions helped usher in a better understanding of how to implement better dashboarding and analytics practices sourced with Ed-Fi data standard information.
Work Group discussions and recommendations resulted in important accomplishments across 2 phases of work. The big topics included:
- Recommend dashboard replacement
- Identify important use cases
- Identify future analytical effort options
- Capture best analytical practices in the field
- Coalesce learning into specific recommended strategies for the community
The RVWG summaries were shared with other advisory groups including the TAG and will continue to be evaluated for community adoption and response.
While the RVWG has ended, the importance of unlocking data to improve student outcomes continues through these combined efforts across the Ed-Fi Community. Thank you for bringing that voice forward and continuing to champion for all students.
