LEAs responding: 19

  • Multi-year, direct query for analytics: 2
  • Multi-year, move data downstream for analytics: 5
  • Multi-year, combination of direct query and downstream: 3
  • Single-year, move data downstream: 2
  • Single-year, combination of direct query and downstream: 1
  • Not in production: 6 (2 preferred single year and 4 multi-year)

Also submitting: 2 states, 1 managed provider, 1 LEA collaborative (all "multi-year, move data downstream for analytics")

Summary

  • Most LEAs likely use a multi-year setup
    • Overwhelmingly the reasons cited are simplicity of longitudinal analysis and simplicity of architecture
  • Even if a LEA uses multi-year, most move the data off the ODS for at least some analytics reporting
    • Reasons cited: performance, lower complexity, wanted to use pre-existing data marts, other vendor tooling support (e.g., DAX, Microsoft Flow), need for post-processing
  • Survey suggests that managed providers, larger implementation, and those with a longer tenure on Ed-Fi prefer a single-year setup
