Student Equity - Report Out

The Student Equity Special Interest Group had three main goals:

  1. Review and Prioritize the Student Equity requirements contributed by Leon County
  2. Provide input into and feedback on the Alliance's work to deliver a Starter Kit focused on Student Equity
  3. Discuss the current data availability to answer these Student Equity questions

In addition to those goals, the special interest group also provided feedback on updating the gender options within the Ed-Fi namespace of descriptors.

Review and prioritize Leon County's student equity requirements

This review covered the five main reports of the Lean County dashboards: Secondary Programs, Teachers (by experience and performance), General Education, Discipline Outcomes, and Assessments.  It was agreed upon that the assessment report could be excluded on the basis of complexity.  It was broadly acknowledged that the assessment portion of student equity is important but everyone found value in the remaining reports.  Leon County's approach to student equity was broadly confirmed from the special interest group.  We discussed the varying levels of data quality and data accessability needed to drive a similar report across new districts.

You can find a solution guide to the data required to drive the student equity use case here:

Student Equity starter kit guidance

Based on the work of the special interest group we were able to proceed with a starter kit that encompasses the guidance provided by the group.  The starter kit includes a solution guide describing the data required to drive such a use case (see link above).  It also provides examples on how to load the appropriate data, expose the information through a middle layer, and the visualizations needed to drive the use case.

The Student Equity starter kit can be found in tech docs at:

In addition to the starter kit collateral there is documentation on how to support the use case in the field through starter kit badges.  The starter kit badges can be awarded to any vendor or collaborative that can either provide the data necessary to drive the student equity use case or has an implementation of the use case that a district can use.

More information regarding each badge can be found here:

Gender updates

During the discussion, we identified that the Ed-Fi namespace for genders only included three options; female, male, not available.  These selections could be updated through the use of additional descriptors but there was interest in improving the default list.  The discussion led to a review with the existing special interest group members and resulted in the inclusion of another option labeled non binary.  These releases are included in the 3.3-b version of the data standard.
